Hall of
Heroes
Our mlitary service men and women have, throughout our nations history, protected the United States of America on foreign shores and when called upon have laid down their lives for their fellow comrades and their nation. Not all have lived through peril and not all have died. It is not only their comrades that remember their sacrifice but it is also the nation's duty and responsibility to do so.
From the time of George Washington, creator of the Badge of Merit, to today those members are recognized with what some may call trinkets and badges but to those that have served, are serving and will serve, these "trinkets" have value and meaning. Not all who serve will be granted nor awarded the most high of these awards for their acquisition involves great peril and sacrifice that many, thankfully, will never be in a position to give.
At the top of what is known as the Pyramid of Honor is the nation's highest award - The Medal of Honor. This medal throughout our nation's 250 year history has only been presented to just over 3,520 individuals.
Just below the Medal of Honor are the various service crosses. For the Army it is The Distinguished Service Cross. For the Navy and Marine Corps it is the Navy Cross. The Air Force has it's Air Force Cross. The newcomer to this prestigious lot is the Coast Guard Cross. However, throughout the history of these distinguished awards, they have been presented to members of sister services by the parent service.
The Silver Star is the third highest military award designated solely for heroism in combat. Established in 1918 as the Citation Star, in 1932 it was redesignated as a medal with a retroactive provision that allowed servicemen as far back as the Spanish-American War(1898) to receive it for gallant actions.
This section is our humble offering at remembering these brave men and women. We call it simply "The Hall of Heroes".
This is an ONGOING project and may not be complete.
